Toddlers and Church

I am a firm believer now that even when you have a baby or toddler, you should still make it to church on Sunday (especially if your catholic, like I am). Our church has an infant room, which allows your child to talk and play while you watch the mass from behind glass. The theory is wonderful, but for my daughter it is a nightmare. She sees the room as a playroom and we spend the entire time pulling her away from newborn babies and other kids. It becomes a nightmare, so therefore we decided to keep her in the phew with us to teach her how to be quiet during mass. This unfortunately doesn't always work well because she is a toddler. However, if her disruption is too loud then we take her out till she calms down.
Today at mass, I noticed a few people giving me a dirty look because my daughter was making quiet noise during the mass. I found myself becoming upset at these people judging me and our decision to have our daughter with us in church. Of course there is always another mother going through the same thing, and we exchange looks of compassion for the situation. Personally I was brought to church from birth on up to sit in the phew with my parents. Also many churches do not have rooms for children, and they have no other option. I try and give these onlookers the benefit of the doubt; they don't have kids, they are having a bad day, etc. It is the same scenario when your toddler or child acts up in public and the other mothers give you looks of sympathy, while the non parents give you a look as if they were saying, " Why can't you control your child!?". I am a catholic, and I will attend Mass whether I get to listen to every part of it or not because at least God knows I am there and trying.

  1. Morgan insists we sit in the FRONT and CENTER row... imagine that with not only Morgan but RJ too! We make lots of noise... but more than one priest has said we are glad you are bringing your children and able to make it to church. So blah to the grouchos that give the dirty looks... they should go to the early mass where there are no kids! Hugs!
