Registering for Baby-What I have Learned

Recently I have had a lot of old friends of mine who are pregnant! I started thinking about products that were helpful and or lifesavers most of the time. Therefore I decided to write a blog about products that are very helpful to register for, and the ones that you can hold off on until you have your baby and find out their needs.

My List:

-Swaddlers: Baby swaddlers are so great for getting those uncontrollable arms, and for nurturing the baby for the new world. If you also read the book, "The Happiest Baby on the Block", it also recommends it for your newborn.

-Sheet Savers: I cannot begin to tell you how much they help cut down your wash and changing sheets everyday. I don't think these are needed as much until the baby is probably around 3 months or more, but every baby is different.

-Bottle drying rack- I know this sounds ridiculous, but if your not breastfeeding it is a very kitchen smart way to keep organized, especially when your lacking sleep and coordination.

-Diaper Bag- A decent sized diaper bag is key. I feel like you can base this on your "purse" personality. If you like to have lots of things in your purse, then you definitely need a bigger diaper bag. Regardless in the beginning if its your first, you want and need everything with you for any situation. It is a priceless investment.

-Baby Sling- This is really great because your infant sleeps alot and alot of times you want them with you, so this way you can move around and do things while your baby is on you. I recommend keeping the instructions or finding one that is easy to get on and off with a sleeping baby.

-Infant sleeper- I think this may be used once the baby is no longer swaddled. However it is safe and so much more convenient. They don't get twisted up in blankets later and it keeps them warm throughout the night. They run about $20, so I recommend them as a registry item.

-Boppy Pillow: I think many people already know these are very helpful, especially while your constantly feeding your baby with a bottle or breastfeeding. You can also use them later for them to lie on and then as a spotter when they are sitting up.

-Infant Mesh Seat for Tub: I highly recommend this for infants because the plastic tubs were not sufficient for me. I had to buy a sponger to help her not slip and slide, and I felt the plastic tub was an awful product. The seat is great for the sink, tub, etc. It is easily portable and you can run water over them and it drains out.

When I was registering I was focusing on the immediate things I needed for the baby when she arrived...the swing, bouncy seat, clothes, bottles, etc. However after talking to my sister in law (mother of four) she pointed out some other things I would need later that are good to register for also. I registered for a booster seat, bumbo seat and tray, and feeding items.

The things that you may want to wait on:

My daughter had severe acid reflux, and I did not breastfeed, so the bottles I bought I decided to second guess. I ended up getting Dr. Brown's bottles because I knew people who loved them and who recommended them. I loved them, and I went out and got more, although I had a lot of other bottles I registered for and received. I also got pacifiers, but my daughter only wanted the soothie ones which the hospital gave her for the first couple months. I registered for a bottle sterilizer which I felt was pointless and never used.

Recommendations:

I personally preferred Pampers diapers, which they used in our hospital. I think they are the best. I used Huggies, which would leak when she would have, what we liked to call an "explosion". I hated every other brand, and I personally will always stay with Pampers. I also think all diaper rash creams are the same for the most part. I found AD Ointment is good because is like a Vaseline, and can be used for minor cuts (if you make them bleed clipping their nails, which I did often). I used Mylican drops, which I to this day do not know if they worked or not, but I recommend them anyway. I also recommend getting Little Tummy's Gripe Water, it works great for hiccups and for the colic baby. I think white noise is a great thing to have for all babies for those cranky situations or for the colic baby. You can download it off of Itunes or buy Cd's. I also love Jewel's Lullaby CD because it is really beautiful and peaceful.

My little bit of advice from me because I am still living and learning :) Oh and don't forget a bottle of wine and some bubble bath for yourself :)
