I never thought I would get to the point where life would be better for my little girl with her reflux. We had many days and nights of screaming and colic like symptoms which makes you go crazy as a mother. You honestly pour yourself a glass of wine while you hand shakes from your nerves being shot, as your baby naps for what may well be 10 minutes. Irelyn is now 3 months and she is a totally different baby then she was a month and a half ago, but at the time you feel hopeless and uneducated on what to do. I feel like so many of my girlfriends who just also had babies or have in the past few years, have experienced the same issue. The first thing we do is go to google, to find out more information. Does it even help? I feel that the information out there is not specific enough on what to do or how to handle it.....like tips, or smart ideas on how to cope with your screaming child. The honest truth may be that it is out there, but when do you have free time to seriously search the Internet for hours and study up on it. You don't! You probably get a few opportunities during the day to hit facebook or your email so you can vent and distract your mind. Everyone's experiences are different, just as all babies are different. What I wanted was a short, specific list of tips, advice and key signs of possible reflux. I am not qualified by any means to write that article. This is how I would personally write my own advice based on my baby.
What was happening....
-She was screaming as she fed-gulping formula then scream, gulp then scream. It was like she was starving, but it hurt to swallow and eat.
-She was very gassy (which many infants experience) which threw us off because we thought she just had gas.
-She would have screaming spells in which nothing helped, and I mean absolutely nothing.
How we coped.....
-I realized that white noise was always a winner, and heck it still is sometimes. You can go onto I-tunes and actually download white noise and then put it on repeat so it never ends!
-She loves the bath, and so I always would put her in the tub when I couldn't get her to calm down, she would be calm for the length of the bath, which gave me about 10 min or so of peace.
-The swing is an amazing invention, and I would put the binky in her mouth and prop her blanket up to hold it in (of course I was sitting there watching her).
-The sling....this seemed to work sometimes when I couldn't get her to nap.
What we did that helped her......
-She is on Nutramagen by Enfamil, which is super expensive (we call it liquid gold), but it solved her digestive issues.
-She started out on Axid, which did not work, and then moved to Prevacid (which is a miracle reflux drug in my eyes)
-We took her for an upper GI which showed us her reflux
-We added rice cereal into her bottles, which help tremendously with the reflux
Now our life is much better.....but we still have an infant, so she gets fussy, has bad days, and switches her schedule on us. I just feel like if so many babies go through this, we should have some pre-birth reflux class to prepare us for it, lol. I just wanted to know other people were up when I was calming a screaming baby. Sometimes you feel like your the only one up feeling stressed with shot nerves.

When I was a baby, I had terrible upset stomach for months bc I was, unbeknownest to the doctors, allergic to milk. All milk. What was I finally put on? Nutramagen. Did it ruin countless blenders? It did. But afterward, I was a happy baby. Before? Nothing but screaming, apparently. I'm glad she's getting better!! xxx Julia
ReplyDeleteNutramagen is called liquid gold in our household, lol! It is so expensive, but for one reason or another that and her acid reflux drug makes her a content happy baby!
